In Grade R we realise the importance of learning through play. We also recognise that play is key to the emotional well-being and mental health of our learners.
The Grade R teachers provide a nurturing environment where the holistic development of each child is encouraged in the following areas:
If any developmental delays are identified, we encourage early intervention to ensure that every child is fully prepared for the formal school system.
The Jolly Phonics is used as part of our literacy program and a practical approach is taken to developing number concepts. Life Skills are integrated into all aspects of learning to make the learning meaningful and to enable the child to become a well-rounded learner.
The children also attend Buzz (a creative arts lesson), Stimuzone (a computer and coding lesson), Bible lessons and Library Lessons.
Our Extra-Mural program consists of in-house (soccer/athletics/hockey/ball skills/) as well as external programs (Rugby/Ballet/Karate/Cricket/Netball/Gymnastics).

In Grade R, we learn through play! There is so much more to play than just having fun. It promotes curiosity, exploration, and creativity. Moreover, play provides our children with the opportunity to socialise and develop their fine and gross motor skills. It builds their cognitive and problem-solving skills while also developing their imagination. We have a fantasy corner, book corner, construction corner, Maths corner and Phonics corner to facilitate learning through play.
In Grade R, we have continual assessments throughout the year. We provide a detailed report at the end of each term. We cover all 3 primary learning areas – Home language, Mathematics and Life skills.
We follow the CAPS curriculum, but add additional resources, materials, and programmes to provide a more in-depth and holistic programme, inclusive of all children in our care.
“Children learn through play. Most importantly, in play children learn how to learn.”– O. Fred Donaldson
In the Foundation Phase (Grades 1-3) we recognise the importance of laying a solid foundation on which to build all further learning. We encourage the child to see the value of education and strive to inspire a love of learning.
Formal schooling is always an adjustment from the pre-school environment. Our teachers work together to ensure that the transition is as seamless as possible.
Bizweni aims to educate and prepare learners for life. We see the value of developing important life-skills such as teamwork, resilience, independence and self-discipline.
We make use of Jolly Phonics and Jolly Grammar as part of our Literacy programmes and combine the Jolly Phonics readers and the Oxford Reading Tree.
The children also attend BUZZ (creative arts) lessons, Stimuzone (computer and coding) lessons, Bible and Library lessons on a weekly basis.
Our Extra-Mural program consists of in-house (soccer/athletics/hockey/ball skills/chess) as well as external programs (Rugby/Ballet/Karate/Cricket).
We also offer extra-lessons in Mathematics and English for those children who are identified as needing extra support. We do believe that early intervention is best. All children who are identified as having developmental delays are encouraged to get the necessary support promptly to ensure that they are able to develop a solid foundation without gaps.

Taking part in imaginative and expressive activities in art, craft, design, music, dance and movement helps support our learners creative development. Art is included in the class curriculum as well as specialist Drama and Music lessons that are included in their weekly program. Boys and girls have the opportunity to participate in a variety of musical activities at our school, which include general piano and guitar lessons.
Our Academic Support program is tailored around the needs of any child who may experience challenges in their day to day learning, with the focus being primarily on academic difficulties.
Therapy takes place during the school day, enabling our teachers and therapists to work together to ensure each learner gets the necessary support they need.
In 2023 we aim to offer both Coding and Robotics programs in our Curriculum. We envision extending our learners` programming and computer skills, helping them to improve their problem-solving and systematic reasoning skills.
Your child’s learning is continually assessed throughout the Foundation Phase through observation of their day-to-day activities as well as informal academic testing.
“The Foundation Phase is where children are afforded the chance to create and explore the building blocks to their academic career. By fostering a fun and exciting environment, while incorporating practical life experiences, a child has the opportunity to grow within themselves and become active little members in society.”
Jessica Coetzee Head of Foundation Phase

In the Intermediate Phase the following subjects are taught and assessed: (Grades 4 – 6)
In the Senior Phase the following subjects are taught and assessed: (Grade 7)
Homework is of great value to learners in the InterSen Phase as it helps them build on what they have already learnt in the classroom and prepares them for their next stage of learning. It is also valuable for teachers as it helps them assess the progress of their pupils.
The main aim of assessment is to provide clearer guidelines for parents of the strengths or developmental needs required by the learner in each learning area. The aim is to ensure that learners leave Primary School as confident, critical thinking and socially responsible citizens. The curriculum will ensure that all learners acquire and apply the knowledge and skills at their grade level.
The boys and girls receive a report at the end of each term. Meetings between parents and teachers are encouraged and arranged during the course of the year.
Pupils are prepared for a variety of High Schools according to individual strengths and interests. At the end of the first term in Grade 7, schools best suited to pupils’ abilities are recommended to pupils and parents.
“In the Intermediate Phase (Grades 4–6) and the Senior Phase (Grade 7), we focus on nurturing intellectual curiosity, personal growth, and a lifelong love for learning. Our dedicated educators utilize a balanced curriculum that integrates core academic subjects with Creative Arts, Physical Education, and Technology, ensuring a holistic approach to development. Learners attend weekly art lessons at Helderberg Fine Art Studio as part of their weekly timetable as well as weekly coding and robotics lessons presented by Stimuzone.
We strive to provide a challenging academic environment that promotes critical thinking, problem-solving, and effective communication skills, encouraging learners to reach their full potential. Alongside academic excellence, we are dedicated to supporting each child’s development by fostering their unique talents and interests, and building self-confidence, independence, and a sense of responsibility. Additionally, we aim to cultivate open-mindedness and respect for diversity, preparing students to navigate and contribute positively to a global society.”
